Alabama A&M University’s football team will end its season on Saturday with an away game against Texas Southern University in Houston. The matchup, part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Shell Energy Stadium.

This meeting marks the 20th time the two teams have faced each other since 2001. Alabama A&M leads the series with a record of 15 wins and four losses.

Alabama A&M, currently holding a 4-7 overall record and 1-6 in conference play, narrowly missed a win last weekend. The Bulldogs lost to Florida A&M by a score of 26-23 at Louis Crews Stadium after failing to rally in the final minutes. During that game, Alabama A&M’s offense recorded 233 rushing yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run by Ryan Morrow.

Texas Southern enters the contest with a 4-5 overall record and is 3-2 in SWAC games. The Tigers are coming off a comeback victory over Southern University, winning 35-30 after overcoming a two-touchdown deficit.

The game will be broadcast live on HBCU GO with James Hadnot providing play-by-play commentary, John Kelley as analyst, and Lawrencia Moton reporting from the sidelines. Fans can also listen on WJAB (90.9 FM), where Maurice Brooks will handle play-by-play duties alongside analyst Thai Floyd and pregame/postgame hosts Evan Hayes and Chauncy Sanders.

Both teams’ head coaches have NFL experience and were nearly teammates for the Washington Redskins; Sam Shade played from 1999 to 2002 while Clarence Dishman was with the team from 1997 to 1998.

Alabama A&M has struggled recently, losing six of its last seven games. Last week’s defeat marked their first failure to score in an opening quarter since November 2024, ending a streak of fifteen games. Kicker David Faulk missed his first field goal attempt of the season but remains successful on ten out of eleven tries since taking over kicking duties in September.

Statistically, Alabama A&M ranks second nationally in fourth down conversion percentage defense and eighth among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams. They are also ranked highly for blocked kicks and red zone offense within their conference. Keon Handley Jr. leads both the nation and SWAC in fumbles recovered, while David Faulk is third nationally in field goal percentage.

Texas Southern features running back Athean Renfro who has rushed for over eight hundred yards this season with seven touchdowns. Defensively, Isaiah Bogerty and Matthew Cooks have combined for more than one hundred forty tackles. The Tigers rank among national leaders in kickoff returns, turnovers gained, turnover margin, and limiting tackles for loss allowed.

In series history, Alabama A&M has won five straight matchups against Texas Southern; their last loss came in 2016 by a three-point margin. Of note, Alabama A&M is seven-and-one when games are decided by seven points or fewer.

Key factors identified for Saturday’s game include protecting the line of scrimmage, winning turnovers, and minimizing penalties.
