Alabama A&M softball falls to Bethune-Cookman in high-scoring game

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs softball team lost to Bethune-Cookman in a high-scoring game, 16-11, on Saturday at Bulldog Field.

Bethune-Cookman took an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning after Alabama A&M made defensive errors. Josefina Lacalle responded for the Bulldogs with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

In the third inning, Bethune-Cookman increased its lead by scoring four more runs, making it 7-1. Alabama A&M answered back with a solo home run from Kali Austerman and a three-run home run by Grace Cruthis to narrow the gap to 7-5.

Alabama A&M continued their efforts in the fourth inning when Lacalle hit an RBI single, bringing the score to 7-6. However, Bethune-Cookman pulled away again in the sixth inning by scoring eight runs, extending their lead to 15-6.

The Bulldogs kept competing offensively in the bottom of the sixth. Kaylee Tatum doubled to drive in a run. Austerman then hit her second home run of the day—a three-run shot—bringing Alabama A&M closer at 15-10. Cruthis added another run with a bunt single to make it 15-11 before Bethune-Cookman scored once more in the seventh inning.

Alabama A&M had 14 hits during the game. Austerman led with three hits—including two home runs—and four RBI. Lacalle contributed three hits and two RBI, while Cruthis had two hits and four RBI including her earlier home run.

Following this result, Alabama A&M’s overall record stands at 13 wins and 11 losses, with an 0-3 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play Detroit Mercy next at Bulldog Softball Field on Tuesday, March 10th, with games set for noon and 2 p.m.
