Alabama A&M University’s women’s basketball team secured a 50-41 win over Alabama State in the Bridge Builder Classic on Monday at the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Alabama. The victory marks the Bulldogs’ fourth consecutive win and completes a season sweep of their in-state rival.
The Bulldogs, now holding an 8-9 overall record and 4-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, relied on strong defense throughout the game. They held Alabama State to 36 percent shooting and made key defensive stops late in the contest.
Kalia Walker led Alabama A&M with 15 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Jaida Belton contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and two assists. Coriah Beck added eight points while Aniya Palmer finished with five.
Alabama A&M started strong by limiting Alabama State to just eight first-quarter points and took a 14–8 lead after one period. The Bulldogs maintained control for much of the first half and entered halftime ahead by one point at 24–23.
The third quarter saw Alabama A&M’s defense hold the Hornets to only ten points while forcing several turnovers. A late three-pointer from Belton helped give the Bulldogs a narrow lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Alabama A&M outscored Alabama State 15–8. Walker and Belton combined for seven points during the last five minutes as their team kept Alabama State from scoring any field goals over the final three minutes.
Despite shooting just 25 percent from the field, Alabama A&M converted 16-of-20 free throws. They also won the rebounding battle (44–42) and outscored their opponent’s bench by a margin of 17–2.
For Alabama State (5-11 overall, 2-3 SWAC), Clearia Peterson recorded a double-double with 14 points and twelve rebounds. Caylee Simpson added thirteen points for the Hornets, who struggled at the free-throw line by making only four of fifteen attempts.
Looking ahead, Alabama A&M will continue its road trip Thursday against Prairie View A&M at William J. Nicks Building with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m., streamed live on SWAC TV.
