With the close of the 2021-22 campaign, the Alabama A&M Sports Information Office is producing a Season in Review for each of the program’s 16 sports from the past year.

That series began with the fall season before progressing to the winter and spring campaigns. Each week reviews will be released on Mondays and Wednesdays until concluding with the final spring sport on Monday, July 18 and a Department Season in Review on Wednesday, July 20. Today we take a look back at the 2021-22 Men’s Indoor Track & Field season.

2021-22 Men’s Indoor Track & Field

2021-22 Season in Review

  • Competed in four meets during season.
  • Returned to SWAC Indoor Championships (2/17-18) for first time since 2018. As a result of severe weather in Birmingham, Alabama, all men’s events were contested on the second day of the meet.
  • Also competed at Samford Open (1/22), Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational (2/4) and Samford’s Bulldog Open (2/12).

Individual Achievements/Honors

  • Junior Brandon McLaren (Clifton, Hanover, Jamaica) delivered impressive campaign, placing 3-of-20 in the 60-meter hurdles (8.41) at East Tennessee State’s Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational before notching pair of impressive outings at Bulldog Open. Placed 5-of-45 in the long jump (6.89m) and 11-of-42 in 60-meter hurdles (8.49) before coming in 3-of-24 in long jump (7.07m) and 10-of-24 in 60-meter hurdles (8.46) at SWAC Championships.
  • Junior Nicholas Powell (Montgomery, Ala.) joined McLaren, registering strong performances in all four meets. Opened with 22-of-61 effort in 200-meters (22.78) at Samford Open and was 6-of-67 in 400-meters (50.23) at ETSU. Followed with 14-of-73 finish in 400-meters (49.55) at Bulldog Open and was 12-of-30 in that event with a time of 49.92 at SWAC Championships.
  • On the field side, senior Demetrius Hurry II (Foley, Ala.) and junior Isaiah McCaulley (Huntsville, Ala.) held it down with strong outings all year.
  • McCaulley was 16-of-30 in the weight throw (12.17m) in the opener and then improved dramatically, finishing 9-of-40 with a mark of 14.61-meters at ETSU. He would add a 17-of-42 performance in the weight throw (13.88m) at the Bulldog Open before coming in 8-of-21 in that event with a season-best 14.88-meters at the SWAC Championships.
  • Hurry would compete in the final three meets, delivering strong outings in the weight throw in each. He posted a distance of 14.13-meters for a 14-of-40 finish at ETSU and was 16-of-42 (14.00m) at the Bulldog Open. He saved his best for last, delivering 9-of-21 finish and season-best mark of 14.54-meters at SWAC Championships.
  • Freshman Keyshawn Johnson (Lakeland, Fla.) notched a pair of strong efforts in the 400-meters, placing 18-of-67 (51.56) at ETSU and 34-of-73 at the Bulldog Open with a personal-best 51.38.
  • Junior Kyle Graham (Mobile, Ala.) got consistently better in the 400-meters all season long, beginning with a 13-of-67 finish with a time of 51.24 at ETSU. He lowered that to 51.13 the following meet (Bulldog Open), finishing 31-of-73, before dropping it all the way to 50.35 at the SWAC Championships. That time had him in the top half of the field with a 15-of-30 outing.
