Amya Joy leads women’s heptathlon after first day at Falcon Classic

Amya Joy led the women’s heptathlon through four rounds on March 13, highlighting the opening day for Alabama A&M University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Montevallo Falcon Classic held at the UM Track & Field/Lacrosse Stadium.

Joy secured first place in both the 100-meter hurdles and high jump events, finished second in shot put, and took third in the 200 meters. She accumulated a total of 2,688 points, giving her a lead of 300 points over her competitors.

In men’s long jump, Alabama A&M athletes swept the podium. Justin Walker won gold with a leap of 7.43 meters. Joshua Graham placed second with a jump of 7.28 meters, while Cameron Andrews finished third at 7.24 meters. Andre Jones also competed and placed ninth.

On the women’s side in long jump, Lanaisha Lubin finished fifth with a mark of 5.59 meters and Mariah Lofton was sixth at 5.40 meters. In discus competition, Leah Brown earned bronze with a throw of 40.75 meters while Karley Malveo placed sixth at 36.40 meters.

The Montevallo Falcon Classic will conclude Saturday starting at 9 a.m., again at the UM Track & Field/Lacrosse Stadium.
