FOIA Request to Athens State University Regarding Chinese National Students on May 16, 2025.

As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at the Huntsville Leader have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Athens State University. Our request seeks detailed information concerning the university’s Chinese National students and related policies.

Specifically, we have asked for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, along with their respective departments of study. If individual names are protected under privacy laws, we have requested aggregated data showing the total number of such students broken down by department.

Additionally, we are seeking information on scholarships awarded to these students. This includes details about each scholarship’s amount and its source. We also want to identify any recipients of scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, our request includes any policies or procedures that describe how the university monitors students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to safeguard its Intellectual Property and other confidential information.

This inquiry is made in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency through public records access. As media professionals, we believe this information is crucial for holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public.
