The City of Huntsville is moving forward with plans to build a new recreation center at John Hunt Park.

During its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday night, the City Council voted to allow Mayor Tommy Battle to enter into an agreement with William M. Boehme & Associates for architectural and engineering services for the design of the planned John Hunt Park Recreation Center.

The 53,000-square-foot center at 3035 Leeman Ferry Road will include four full-size gymnasiums, meeting rooms, restrooms, office space, outdoor pickleball courts, a new lighted parking lot, fitness center and more. The anticipated final completion date for the project is spring 2024.

The total cost of architectural services for the John Hunt Park Recreation Center is $801,978.50. Click here to view the Council resolution.

In July, the City approved a contract to build the Raymond W. Jones Community Center at a former National Guard armory at John Hunt Park. Located near the Steve Hettinger Drive entrance on the east side of John Hunt Park, the center will provide more recreational offerings for Huntsville’s senior population, including those with Parkinson’s disease.
