The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team fell to eighth-seeded Shorter by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in an elimination contest on the final day of the 2022 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at Choccolocco Park. UAH ends its season at 28-25, while SU improves to 29-21.
Tyler Self started on the mound for the Chargers, turning in 5.0 innings with one earned run allowed and two strikeouts. The right-hander finishes his career atop the UAH record books with 363 strikeouts, 51 games started and 361.0 innings.
The Chargers offense notched four base hits in the contest, led by Garrett Bodine and Colin Brewer who both had two hits.
Landon Ezzell posted a team-high two RBI in a 1-for-4 day at the plate, while Brennan Vasquez recorded the Chargers lone extra-base hit with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Self entered into a pitcher's duel early into the contest with no score by either side through the first three innings, until Shorter scored one run apiece in the fourth, fifth and six innings to lead 3-0.
A solo home run to centerfield by Brennan Vasquez put the Chargers on the board in the top of the seventh, but the Hawks responded two runs in the bottom half to extend their advantage to 5-1.
UAH slimmed Shorter's advantage in the top of the eighth to 5-3 after two runs scored on Ezzell's single to left, and that 5-3 score would go on to be the game's final.
This was the UAH baseball program's 20th appearance at the GSC tournament.
