The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2022 campaign with a 3-0 shutout at Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon. UAH improves to 1-1-1, while GSW slides to 3-1-0.
Maialen Mera Torres led the Chargers offense with two goals in the contest, which is the first two-goal performance of her career and the second by a UAH player this season.
Mera Torres put UAH on the board in the second minute on Saturday after scoring off a setup from Jayla Gillespie. She would later score at the 12:44 mark on a penalty kick to extend the Chargers lead to 2-0.
After carrying the 2-0 advantage into halftime, UAH added an insurance goal by Hadas Morin in the 80th minute thanks to an assist by Caroline Buchanan. Morin's goal was her first of the season, while Buchanan now has two assists in 2022 to lead the Chargers.
Hailey Hicks played the majority of time in goal for the Chargers in the shutout win, as she collected one save and navigated four Hurricanes corner kicks.
UAH generated a bevy of chances on Saturday with 10 shots on goal, led by Gillespie's four shots on target. The Chargers additionally accrued nine corner kicks in the contest.
