PORT CITY GRIDIRON FESTIVITIES GAIN MOMENTUM

The Gulf Coast Challenge in historic and festive Mobile, Ala., seems to gain a new wave of excitement every year.  This season, the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University will take on the Tigers of Jackson State University in Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Saturday, November 12, at 4 p.m.  The Gulf Coast Challenge Game Ambassador for 2022 is Mobile native, JSU alum and NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Robert Brazile.

Presented by Alabama Power under the coordination of the Mobile Sports Authority, the 5th Annual Gulf Coast Challenge features a week of exciting activities for all ages.  National recording artist Jon B will perform live in a free and easy, lawn chair kickoff concert Wednesday, November 9, at Mobile’s Mardi Gras Park on South Royal Street at 6 p.m. 

Bulldog and Tiger professionals will participate in a Business Networking Reception at Flight Works at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 10.

On Friday, November 11, Challenge attendees will enjoy the Gulf Coast Mardi Gras Fest with Secondline Parade at 6 p.m. at Moe’s BBQ at 701 Springhill Avenue.  Over at Mardi Gras Park, another gathering of Bulldogs will witness a 6:30 p.m. Step Show and Concert featuring Cupid and 69Boyz on Royal Street.

Also on Friday, November 11, the Treco Entertainment will present the Gulf Coast Challenge HBCU Fest, featuring the Isley Brothers plus Tank live in concert. The event will be held at the Mobile Civic Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show.  Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.

Get a little rest, but wake up by 10 a.m.  HBCU Bishop State Community College is presenting the 2022 Gulf Coast Challenge Parade.  “Dr. SetitOff” Carl Cunningham, Jr., is slated at the Grand Marshal.  The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Warren Street.  The route includes sections of Warren Street, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Springhill Avenue, Washington Avenue and Congress Street.

The Challenge Tailgating Tent will be setup at Ladd-Peebles Stadium from 12 noon until 3 p.m.  The much-anticipated game begins at 4 p.m.  Following the game and 5th Quarter Battle on Saturday, November 12, rapper and record producer Doug E. Fresh will perform live in a post-game concert, closing out the week’s activities.
