The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team hosts a first-round matchup for the 2022 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championships as the fifth seed against eighth-seeded Shorter on Monday at 6 p.m. at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
The Chargers earned the right to host in the first round of the GSC tournament by finishing fifth in the conference standings with a 9-7 league record, as the squad went 15-15 overall in the 2022 regular season.
The winner of Monday night's matchup moves on to play in the quarterfinal round on Friday against fourth-seeded Montevallo at 11 a.m. on the campus of GSC Regular Season Champion West Florida.
Senior Ally Kennis was a key contributor for the Chargers in the final two matches of the regular season, posting 27 kills over the five-set victories against Mississippi College and West Alabama to help clinch the right to host on Monday.
Overall, UAH's offense is guided by Gracie McGee with a team-best 245 kills and a 2.55 kills per set average, as she is also a strong all-around performer by ranking fourth on the squad with 235 digs.
The Chargers defense features a total of four players with 200 digs or more in the 2022 campaign, led by Tatiana Bonilla with 281 digs. Shayla Libby (273 digs), Hailey Holshouser (263 digs), and McGee (235 digs) also achieved the feats this season.
Kiara Hill has been another successful two-way player for the Chargers, as she owns a team-leading 79 total blocks while rating third on the offense with 174 digs.
Monday's tilt between UAH and Shorter will be the 23rd all-time meeting between the programs and the third-ever in the GSC tournament.
The two squads matched up one time in the 2022 campaign, with the Chargers edging out a five-set win over the Hawks at home on Oct. 29. Overall, UAH is 8-14 against SU in program history.
Shorter ended the campaign 16-17 overall and 8-8 in GSC matches, after ending the year with a 3-0 win at home over Christian Brothers. The Hawks offense is led by Lacee Glover's team-high 244 kills, while Madison Sprosty guides SU defensively with 219 digs.
Tickets to Monday's contest will be $10. UAH students and children under five will receive free admission. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online or at the door.
