Calhoun Prepares Future Healthcare Workers During Annual Simulated Mass Casualty Drill

The Calhoun Community College Health Sciences Division and campus Police Department will collaborate for its annual mass casualty drill. The active simulation will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., in the testing center of the Health Sciences Building on the College’s Decatur campus.

According to Kenneth Kirkland, Calhoun’s new Dean of Health Sciences, the simulation will have additional hands on deck to make the drill as real as possible for the students who will be participating. Agencies such as HEMSI, Athens Limestone EMS, Decatur Morgan Hospital EMS, Decatur Fire and Rescue, Survival Flight, Air Evac, and Lifeguard EMS will also participate in the training. There will also be involvement from the Athens Limestone Tech Center, as their Health and HOSA classes will participate in the drill as well.

Each year, the college hosts this high-energy training where students and public safety representatives go into full character to mimic real-world emergencies that occur in the healthcare and public safety industry. The scenarios are not disclosed prior to the event to make the simulation as real as possible.

Campus visitors and students will see several yellow warning signs posted around the Health Sciences Building reading, “Active Simulation in Progress”. They can also expect a heavy amount of movement from simulation participants and traffic from emergency vehicles such as police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, as well as medical helicopters. Patient actors in the simulation will be triaged and transported throughout the Health Sciences Building where the simulation will continue with the college’s Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), and Surgical Technology students also participating.

Free counseling services for participants and witnesses will be offered by the college upon request. To seek counseling on or following the day of the event, please call (256)306-2630.
