There were 14 businesses that registered in cities within Limestone County in the week ending Jan. 21, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

This is 27 percent more than the week before, when 11 businesses were registered.

Athens registered the most businesses in Limestone County.

More than 99 percent of Alabama's businesses are considered small, with more than 47 percent of Alabama's employees working for a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A Civic Economics study found $100 spent at a locally-owned business puts $47 back into the local economy while the total is just $13 for non-local businesses.
