U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has joined Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), John Kennedy (R-LA), and Rick Scott (R-FL) to introduce the Stop Fraud by Strengthening Oversight and More Accountability for Lying and Illegal Activity (Stop Fraud by SOMALIA) Act. The legislation aims to increase penalties for child care providers who commit fraud and would create immigration consequences for non-citizen providers found guilty of such offenses, making them inadmissible and deportable.
Senator Tuberville commented on the bill’s introduction, stating: “Taxpayer-funded, Somalian-run ‘child care centers’ in Minnesota are one of the biggest scandals in American taxpayer history. Governor Tim Walz is 100% responsible for this disaster. He welcomed Somalian illegals to Minnesota, handed them billions in taxpayer dollars, and then refused to ask basic questions about where the money was going. It’s beyond embarrassing and should NEVER be allowed to happen in this country. Congress needs to pass the Stop Fraud by SOMALIA Act to ensure this is the last time taxpayers have to foot the bill for illegal operations like we have seen in Minnesota.”
The proposed act would amend existing child care laws by imposing strict penalties on fraudulent providers. It also requires states to enforce bans against these providers and prevents them from avoiding debarment through restructuring or changing their business names.
Additionally, non-U.S. citizen child care providers involved in fraud or terrorism-related activity would face immigration actions including inadmissibility, deportation, denial of asylum or adjustment of status, mandatory detention, and expedited removal.
