U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has introduced two bills aimed at banning the application of Sharia Law in the United States. The proposed legislation, titled the No Sharia Act and the Preserving a Sharia Free America Act, seeks to address what Tuberville describes as national security concerns related to radical Islamic extremism.
The No Sharia Act would prohibit the use of Sharia Law in cases where it conflicts with constitutional rights. The Preserving a Sharia Free America Act would bar foreign nationals who advocate for Sharia Law from entering the country.
“Sharia Law is fundamentally anti-American and has no place in our country,” said Sen. Tuberville. “If you want to peacefully practice your religion, you have every right to do so under the Constitution. But if you want to come to the United States and advocate for the practice of Sharia Law over U.S. law, you should not be here. We do not want people who chant ‘death to America’ residing in our communities and endangering our families. We must protect American values, not apologize for them. I hope my colleagues can come alongside me in this effort to preserve our Constitutional and God-given rights.”
In the House of Representatives, Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL-06) and Rep. Keith Self (R-TX-03) have introduced companion legislation for the No Sharia Act, while Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX-21) is sponsoring the Preserving a Sharia Free America Act.
Senator Tuberville serves on several Senate committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP, and Aging.
