The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team wrapped up its home nonconference slate with a 14-13 win over Young Harris on Tuesday afternoon at Charger Park. UAH improves to 21-21, while YHC slips to 28-14.

The Chargers offense recorded 16 hits in the contest, led by Garrett Bodine, Landon Ezzell and Jeff Hunter with three hits apiece. Both Bodine and Ezzell notched a home run and a double amongst their three hits.

Bodine additionally finished with a team-high three RBI and four runs scored, with Ezzell and Brennan Vasquez each notching two RBI to follow Bodine.

UAH stole eight bases as a team, including two-steal performances by Ezzell, Hunter and Will Noles. The Chargers eight steals ties the program record for stolen bases in a single game.

Aubry Cleghorn started on the mound for the Chargers, turning in 1.2 innings with six runs allowed – five earned – and two strikeouts.

Payton Lemons earned the win in relief, tossing 1.0 inning with one run allowed. His record improves to 2-1. Tanner Giles notched his second save in 2022 after throwing the ninth with one run allowed.

After a scoreless top of the first that included a pair of strikeouts by Cleghorn, UAH put together a four-run rally to take the early lead.

YHC responded in the top of the second with six runs of their own to notch the lead 6-4, which would become a 6-5 advantage for the Mountain Lions after Bodine scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning.

The Chargers would add one run apiece in the third and fourth innings, prior to a two-run fifth to overtake the Mountain Lions and lead 9-6.

Young Harris cut UAH’s lead to 9-8 with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Chargers would regain the three-run lead with two runs on Vasquez’s two-RBI single in the bottom half of the sixth.

The Mountain Lions tied it with a three-run rally in the seventh, but Ezzell’s solo home run off the scoreboard in right gave UAH the 12-11 lead.

YHC again tied it with one run in the eighth, which setup Bodine for a two-run home run in the eighth to take the lead for good at 14-12. The visitors added one run in the ninth to bring the game to its 14-13 final score.

UAH looks ahead to a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Shorter on Friday and Saturday.
