BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville first-seeded men’s basketball team is set to take on fourth-seeded West Georgia in the 2023 Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Championship Semifinals on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University.
 
UAH Athletics is hosting a tailgate outside of the Pete Hanna Center for all Charger fans at 3 p.m. ahead of the GSC tournament matchup at 5 p.m. Drinks and snacks will be provided.


The Chargers are amidst the program’s 22nd run at the GSC tournament and this will be the team’s 14th appearance in the semifinal round and third under head coach John Shulman.

Saturday’s game will be the fifth matchup all-time between UAH and West Georgia in the conference tournament, with the Chargers holding a 3-1 edge over the Wolves. Overall in the all-time series, UAH is 38-27 against UWG.
 
UAH comes into Saturday’s matchup with a 25-6 overall record that includes a 19-5 mark in conference play this season, as the Chargers advanced out of the GSC tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at Spragins Hall with a 76-60 win over Mississippi College. The Chargers finished the regular season with a 16-1 home record.

Sophomore Chaney Johnson has been the Chargers leader with a team-high 15.9 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game, as he garnered First Team All-GSC and GSC Player of the Year honors earlier this week.
 
Johnson leads an offense that posts 77.0 points per game and boasts three regulars averaging over 10 points per game including Johnson (15.9 PPG), Luke Burnett (13.7 PPG) and Max Shulman (12.1 PPG). Burnett additionally leads the nation with 100 three-pointers made in 2022-23, shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.

West Georgia enters the contest with a 19-8 overall record that includes a 17-7 mark in GSC play this season, after the Wolves advanced to the semifinals with an 86-66 victory over Valdosta State on Tuesday. UWG’s offense averaged 75.5 points per game led by Michael Zabetakis’ 19.2 points per game, while the Wolves defense allows 68.8 points per game. The winner of Saturday’s contest moves on to the GSC tournament title game on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University.
