Myth vs. Fact: Getting to know Huntsville’s Green Team

We re-introduced you to the City of Huntsville’s Green Team a couple of months ago in a blog about their neighborhood cleanups, educational outreach programs and volunteer opportunities.

But sometimes there is a bit of confusion about just what kinds of services Green Team provides, so we’re debunking some common myths about what Green Team does and giving you facts regarding their role within the City.

Myth #1: Green Team organizes cleanups for Huntsville neighborhoods on a regular, rotating schedule.

Fact: If your neighborhood has problem areas for trash and litter, Green Team can help facilitate a cleanup day by providing tools, trash bags and some social media marketing to get the word out to volunteers. However, the effort to organize a cleanup starts with individuals and groups within the neighborhoods. If you or your group would like Green Team’s help in coordinating a cleanup, please call 256-532-5326 or email Green.Team@huntsvilleal.gov.

Myth #2: If a residential property or empty lot in my neighborhood has become unsafe or a nuisance with trash and debris, Green Team will send inspectors, clean it up and issue fines.

Fact: Enforcing City ordinances related to unsafe buildings, substandard housing, junk, tall grass and weeds, graffiti, etc. falls under the authority of the City’s Community Development Office. You can report public nuisances via the SeeClickFix app or Huntsville Connect on the City’s website.

Myth #3: You can drop off household hazardous waste at the Green Team office, and they will dispose of it for you.

Fact: While Green Team partners with the Solid Waste Disposal Authority (SWDA) to educate the public on proper disposal during neighborhood cleanups, hazardous waste items should not be dropped off at the Green Team office. Those items should be taken directly to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at 1055 A Cleaner Way, Huntsville. Their drive-through service is open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visit the Green Team webpage for more information about programs, volunteer opportunities, nature preserves, the Adopt-a-Spot initiative, litter prevention and more. You can also follow Green Team on Facebook for the latest announcements about cleanups, youth education programs and volunteer efforts.
