WASHINGTON— U.S. Representative Dale W. Strong (AL-05), a member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), released the following statement after the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was approved by the Committee by a vote of 58-1. The FY24 NDAA (H.R. 2670) now awaits consideration on the House floor.
“Defending our national security and fighting for North Alabama is my top priority as your Representative. You’d be hard-pressed to find a community that understands the importance of protecting America’s men and women in uniform better than North Alabama. From day one, I have prioritized listening to concerns and critical needs of service members, leadership on Redstone Arsenal, and across our industrial base,” said Representative Strong. “In this bill, I championed what the Tennessee Valley does best: missile defense, cutting-edge research and development, and national security space and cybersecurity programs.”
HASC’s top Republican, Chairman Mike Rogers (AL-03), said the following regarding Rep. Strong’s involvement with the Committee and FY24 NDAA, “Alabama plays an important role in our national defense,” said Rogers. “Since day one, Rep. Strong has worked diligently to support the critical work being done in Alabama to protect our national security. I thank Rep. Strong for his tireless leadership.”
BACKGROUND
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) authorizes policy and appropriations for the Department of Defense, nuclear weapons programs within the Department of Energy, and other defense-related activities. The FY24 NDAA – when signed into law – will mark the 63rd consecutive defense authorization.
During his inaugural NDAA markup process, Rep. Strong had record success advocating for common sense and strategic national security programs, as well as provisions that directly benefit North Alabama, Redstone Arsenal, and the state of Alabama as a whole. As a freshman congressman, Rep. Strong kicked off this year’s NDAA process by hosting a listening session with constituents from North Alabama to ensure that their priorities were reflected in this year’s bill.
