The arrival of summer is about more than hot weather, hanging by the pool and grilling in the backyard. It’s also the optimal time for outdoor landscaping.

While you’re working hard to keep your lawn clean and attractive, why not engage in a little friendly competition? To encourage District 1 residents to maintain their yards this season and beyond, Council Member Devyn Keith is inviting homeowners to participate in the second annual A Cut Above District 1 Summer Landscaping Challenge.

“Last year’s challenge was a big hit, and we hope to build on the momentum in 2023,” he said. “Whether you’re a landscaping pro or just getting started, now is the time to show your chops and help keep Huntsville beautiful.”

The front-yard competition launches Monday, June 19, and concludes Monday, July 31. Residents in District 1 can vie for up to three titles:

  • Best Landscaping (focuses on textures, colors, composition and more technical aspects of landscaping)
  • Most Captivating Floral Display
  • Best Curb Appeal (overall quality)
To submit your residential property for consideration, complete the form on our website. Those who receive awards will take home prizes and a complimentary yard sign designating their title.

Winners selected by a committee of City leaders will be contacted in mid-August. The City Council will recognize each homeowner at a public meeting later that month.

“A Cut Above aims to strengthen partnerships while also fostering cooperation and pride in the D1 community,” Council Member Keith said. “Let’s join together and make this year’s competition one that inspires and connects neighbors from all walks of life.”

Council Member Keith will be working with homeowners’ associations, business groups, recreation centers, faith organizations, public facilities and more to help get the word out about the competition. If you’re interested in partnering with the Council Office on A Cut Above, please email HsvCityCouncil@HuntsvilleAL.gov or call 256-427-5011.

Follow the District 1 Facebook page for updates and lawn tips throughout the competition.
