The City of Huntsville issued the following announcement on March 29.
As some of the nation’s top athletes prepare for the U.S. Paralympics Cycling Open in Huntsville April 8-10, 2022, the search is underway for the next generation of Para cyclists. What better place to look than right here in the Rocket City?
Anyone, ages 18 or older, with physical and/or visual impairments is invited to attend the U.S. Paralympics Cycling Development Clinic. It will be held Sunday, April 3 from 2-4:30 p.m. at the UAH Fitness Center, 500 John Wright Drive, Huntsville. No skill or previous experience is required to attend.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, Para cycling was developed in the 1980s. Visually impaired riders competed in tandem with sighted pilots. The sport later expanded to include those with cerebral palsy, amputations and other physical impairments.
The clinic, presented by the Huntsville Sports Commission and Phoenix, will introduce participants to the various cycles used, such as bicycles, tricycles and handcycles. Whether you’re serious about getting started or just intrigued by the idea, it’s the perfect time to check out a sport the International Paralympic Committee calls a blend of “speed, power, physical strength and mental resilience.”
